Postcard from Southern Italy
by Patricia Thayer on 10/15/25
"The best wine is the wine we drink with friends."  ~  Italian proverb
We whine about the hills, the showers and the heat.
We whine about the beds, and some food that we eat.
But never do we whine 'bout the wine of Italia
Beginning with the bold wines in coastal Campania.
In the ancient shadow cast by Vesuvious,
Bosco d'Medici welcomed sixteen of us.
We braved the winding roads to awesome Amalfi
We sipped fine wine aloft and sailed the sparkly sea.
Then on to Puglia, the heel of the long boot.
Rosso and bianco, we sipped the vintage fruit.
Matera and Ostuni, Lecce, La Masseria,
We tasted and toasted in every osteria.
Sicily, our last stop, set in the blue-green sea,
Oft conquered and oppressed, now democratic and free.
At Planeta Winery we tasted a complex wine,
Tradition and character create the fruit of the vine.
Pompeii and Amalfi, Puglia, Sicily,
'Twas a journey through time; we look back wistfully.
Why do I travel?   To gratefully share with friends, old and new, the finest local wine and freshest regional cuisine wherever I am in the world.   (September 2025)
